2022 records 16,574 new HIV infections and 9,359 deaths

In 2022, Ghana documented a total of 16,574 new cases of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infections, a decline from the 18,036 infections recorded in 2021. This information was disclosed in a release issued by the Ghana AIDS Commission in Accra on Tuesday.

The 16,574 new HIV infections affected individuals of all ages. Among those aged 15 years and above, there were 13,706 infections, while children aged zero to 14 years accounted for 2,180 infections. Adolescents between 10 and 19 years recorded 645 infections, and young people aged 15 to 24 years had 739 new infections.

Tragically, AIDS-related deaths were reported for individuals of all age groups, with a total of 9,359 fatalities. Among them, 7,179 were adults aged 15 years and above, 2,180 were children aged 0 to 14 years, 645 were adolescents aged 10 to 19 years, and 739 were young people aged 15 to 24 years.

Currently, the total number of HIV cases in Ghana stands at 354,927, with individuals aged 15 years and above comprising the largest proportion of infections, totaling 330,215 cases.
