Black Stars Head Coach Otto Addo has stated that he doesn’t place much emphasis on the number of local players he selects for upcoming international assignments.
“It’s not about the league, it’s about the players. And we need the best players to qualify for the AFCON…”#BlackStars head coach, Otto Addo was asked why he picked only one GPL player in his squad and if it was a reflection of the state of the league

Otto Addo’s remarks follow the inclusion of only one local player, Frederick Asare from Kumasi Asante Kotoko, in his final 26-man squad.
This squad, which largely consists of players who participated in the recent games against Mali and the Central African Republic in the 2026 FIFA WORLD CUP Qualifiers, will now shift their attention to the 2025 AFCON qualifiers scheduled for September.
I think i said the last time that we watch closely the local league, i know it is difficult.
I know if i left another player, you’d have asked why i left this player out of the squad.
At the moment, for me it is not about the Ghana premier league, the French League or the premier league or the Bundesliga, it is about the players.
We need the best players to qualify for the AFCON and at the moment, these are the best players i think can beat Angola and Niger in the coming days and that’s why they are in.
