29 ‘Arise Ghana’ demonstrators arrested; organizers to be charged in court – Police

Twenty-nine (29) persons from yesterday’s deadly ‘Arise Ghana’ protests are in police detention.

Police say protest organizers will be arraigned. Police stated the arrests were due to the protesters’ “violent assault” on cops.

29 protestors were detained for attacking police and members of the public, including schoolchildren, during the Arise Ghana march in Accra.

The Ghana Police Service says it’s studying the video of the incident and will arrest any instigators.

Arise Ghana organizers contested several police accusations.

Rex Omar, a coalition member, alleged at a news conference following Tuesday’s rally that a police officer masquerading as a protester was the first to throw stones at the police to provoke a response.

He said coalition members are law-abiding and won’t harm the country’s peace.

“Since our members are peaceful, we hoped for a friendly meeting.” This was unexpected. We’ve worked with the police to find a solution for our protest.

Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC’s National Communications Officer, claimed the police’s reaction was meant to undermine the coalition.
