The Lioness of England have defeated Germany to win the 2022 UEFA Women’s Euro for the first time in the nation’s history.
The Lioness played in a packed Wembley stadium as the home fans spurred them on to victory — almost every kick was met with raucous chants of excitement and encouragement.
England started on the front foot and dominated possession in most part of the game in the first half seeking to unsettle Germany and forcing the Die Nationalelf to go long.
Ellen White and Beth Mead troubled the German defense in more than one occasion in the early exchanges.
Germany turned the heat on in the second half as they came out all guns blazing in an attempt to unsettle the home side. Tabea Waßmuth and Lina Magull had the best chances for the Die Nationalelf.
Ella Toone broke the deadlock with a beautiful chip just outside the box to send the Wembley crowd agog. Magull came close to drawing parity in few occasions but finally had one in the 79th minute. Waßmuth found Magull in the penalty area and with great composure she finished from close range to stir things up.
With either side unable to grab a winner, the game traveled into extra time. Substitute Chloe Kelly sent Wembley into frenzy as she pokes home from corner in extra-time to seal the victory for England — she celebrated wildly by taking off her jersey.
This is England’s major trophy at senior level since 1966 men’s World Cup and the Lioness’s first ever Euro title.
