South American countries namely Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Paraguay have launched a joint bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The soccer executives and political leaders of the four countries are seeking to bring another World Cup to the southern subregion where the first edition was played in 1930 in which Uruguay defeated Argentina 4-2 in the final.
Uruguay President Luis Lacalle Pou hosted the leaders where they activated their candidacy they have been considering since 2017.
The president of South American soccer body CONMEBOL, Alejandro Domínguez, said in a press conference that “the World Cup has to come home”
“One hundred years (since the first World Cup) will be achieved only once. And it has to come back home, we believe that is more than enough of a reason for FIFA to accept that this becomes the only bid.” Domínguez opined.
Portugal and Spain have also declared their intention to host the 2030 World Cup.
Qatar will host this year’s tournament, and the next edition in 2026 will be played in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
