Alexander Afenyo Markin, a member of parliament for Effutu and a member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has predicted that the NPP would be reelected in 2024.
Afenyo Markin, who serves as the NPP’s Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament, recently predicted that the NPP would become the first party in history to win three consecutive terms in office.
He believes that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would be defeated in Ghana because the party has failed to deliver during its time in opposition.
According to an interview the NDC’s Deputy Majority Leader gave to Accra’s Joy News on August 2, 2022, the party has instead turned to attacking the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) harshly and trying to profit from the country’s economic crisis.
The question that I’ve been asking is… “the NDC went from supporting the government to opposing it throughout the course of their eight years in power.
“Is there a difference? They want to re-nominate the same person who appointed them as their party’s leader. Just what has shifted? Did they show, even in the 2020 election, that, despite being in opposition, they had something novel to offer? Despite being in the opposition, what initiatives have they proposed that have gained traction? Afenyo-Markin said, “Let’s just keep attacking and attacking and attacking.”
A government official may lose votes in the upcoming elections, the lawmaker said, “not because NDC is better but because they [Ghanaians] feel frustrated” due to the current economic climate.
If this plan is implemented in the next general elections in 2024, according to Afenyo-Markin, the NPP will have nothing to worry about.
“I’d want to issue a rallying cry to all NPP activists and appointees: “Talk to each other! That’s how we’ll break the 8!” There is nothing to worry about since the adversary, the opponent, has nothing greater to give,” he said, referring to the challenges and interventions that have been implemented in Ghana.
