Barcelona run riot in front of their home supporters at the Camp Nou during the Gamper Trophy on Sunday.
After a successful preseason in the United States, where the team played four friendlies, the Catalans were back under the marquee lights of the newly christened Spotify Camp Nou Stadium where they took on Pumas UNAM in the Gamper Trophy.
The Joan Gamper Trophy has always been the curtain-raiser that usher Barcelona into the new season. It provides the chance for the team’s new summer recruits to play in front of the home crowd for the first time.
It was a display of all-round quality football against the Mexican side. The new signings shone on the day while the ‘old’ guards laid a marker in front of their teeming fans.
Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring with less than two minutes on the clock before putting Pedri on for the second few minutes later. Dembele added the third with a powerful shot into the bottom corner via a Raphinha cut back. Barcelona were already up and running in the early exchanges.
Pedri added the fourth just after 18 minutes. Second half substitutes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Frenkie de Jong all scored one each to complete the trouncing.
Club legend Dani Alves, who now ply his trade with the Mexican side was given a hero’s welcome and presented with a special gift as fans bid him farewell one last time.
