The two brothers have Ghanaian heritage and could either play for Ghana or Spain. Inãki opted to represent Ghana while Nico decided to hold on.
However Luis Enrique invited Nico Williams to Spain’s National Team for the first time, in their upcoming UEFA Nations League games against Switzerland and Portugal almost at the same period Nico’s elder brother and teammate Inãki Williams was called to the Ghana national team.
Many believed Nico’s it was a move to prevent him from joining his brother in the Black Stars but Luis Enrique insisted Nico’s invite to the La Roja was purely down to his unique talents.
The Athletic Bilbao winger told Spain national team media: “I’m very happy to be here, I found out when the call came out. I had no idea that I was in the pre-list, it has been a joy for my whole family and I am going to perform here.” he said.
“My parents and my whole family are proud of me and now we have to continue. My feet is on the ground, I want to work, for the coach to see me. I thank him for this opportunity and I’m going to give my best on the pitch”. he added.
