A banana was thrown at Tottenham striker Richarlison in an apparent racist attack during Brazil’s 5-1 victory over Tunisia in France on Tuesday.
The former Everton forward scored the second goal following Raphinha’s opener and run towards the corner flag to celebrate.
But as he celebrated, fans at the Parc des Princess began to hurl objects including banana at him and his teammates in a shocking moment.
After the game Richarlison said “I think that God did not allow me to see that, because…I don’t know what I could have done in the heat of the moment. May this fan be identified and punished”
He also tweeted “As long as it’s ‘blah blah blah’ and they don’t punish, it will continue like this,”
In a statement, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has condemned the incident saying “The CBF reinforces its stance against discrimination and vehemently repudiates yet another episode of racism in football.”
Spurs have expressed their feeling of disgust in a message of support for their player. The club tweeted “We are disgusted by the racist abuse of Richarlison at last night’s game between Brazil and Tunisia. This has no place in football, or anywhere. We stand with you, Richy”
