Atletico Madrid have reached agreement with Barcelona for the permanent transfer of Antoine Griezmann for a fee of €20 million plus add-ons.
The Frenchman has been on loan from Barcelona since the summer of 2021 but has now signed a permanent contract that will keep him with the club until 30 June 2026.
The club tweeted via their official account “We’re thrilled to announce that Antoine Griezmann has signed a permanent contract until 2026”
After failing to hit the ground running in his first two seasons with the Blaugrana, the forward returned to his previous employers on a two year loan deal that was laden with a number of complicated clauses.
In one of such clauses, Atlético were supposed to sign him permanently for a fee of €40 million if Griezmann play 50% of the games available to him at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. But they were reluctant and sought to give the striker fewer minutes to avoid the resulting fee.
Diego Simeone has constantly brought the marksman on after the hour mark in matches just to ensure he does not meet the 50% threshold.
The good news is that the manager can now use the player without any financial consequences and Griezmann can now rack up as many games as the other players.
