PSG concerned: Messi has more marketing impact than Mbappe outside France

Kylian Mbappe

Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly concerned by the limited impact Kylian Mbappe‘s brand name has outside France.

The Frenchman put pen to paper on a new deal with PSG after turning down Real Madrid, who were interested in signing him for free back in May.

Several eyebrows have been raised after numerous reports revealed that Mbappe will receive as much as 630 million euros in the event he fulfills the 2+1 years of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain.

To put it into perspective, Messi received 555 million euros across four years at Barcelona and NFL star Patrick Mahomes penned a 10-year, 510 million euro contract with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Mbappe‘s 630 million euro contract raises challenges and concerns,” journalist Laurent Perrin wrote on digital newspaper Foot01.

“[PSG’s] No.7 is a marketing phenomenon, but outside our borders his commercial impact remains far inferior to that of Messi and equal to that of Neymar.

“If Messi’s arrival has attracted many sponsors, extending the Frenchman’s contract has above all allowed [PSG] to strengthen their ties with those that were already there.”

PSG are concerned about the lucrative contracts of Messi, Neymar and Mbappe, but especially with the latter’s deal.

They tried to raise 150m euros from player sales last summer, but they failed to do so and sporting advisor Luis Campos didn’t have enough capital to invest in new players to strengthen attack and defence.

This may happen next summer too, as PSG have been criticised for not complying with UEFA’s financial fair play rules.
