Chelsea has completed the deadline day signing of Enzo Fernandez from Benfica for a British record of £107 million.
The Blues’ pursuit of the Argentine international went into the final minutes of the transfer window as both clubs were locked in a never-ending negotiation.
It appears the deal was over until the eleventh hour of deadline day when both clubs eventually made a breakthrough. Fernandez will pen an eight-and-a-half year contract until June 2031.
Benfica confirmed the deal on Wednesday morning in a statement following the completion of the necessary paperworks prior to the deadline.
On Tuesday Chelsea allowed Jorginho to move to Premier League rivals Arsenal which gave the indication that they were very much likely to get the World Cup winner by any means possible.
The Stamford Bridge club were determined to get the deal done before the January window shut with co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali leading the negotiations with the Portuguese giants to its final conclusion.
The disagreement was over the moment Benfica became comfortable with the payment structure.
