AC Milan managed a narrow 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of the last 16 tie at the San Siro courtesy of Brahim Diaz first half strike.
Diaz nodded home a rebound in the 7th minute and appeared to have unsettled the visitors.
But Antonio Conte’s side rallied themselves back into the game and contained Milan for long periods of the contest but lacked conviction in the vital moments.
The hosts’ solid defence successfully shackled the front three of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and, until his withdrawal, Dejan Kulusevski to wrap up a slim victory at home.
Milan will however rue their missed chances and pray it doesn’t come back to hunt them in the reverse fixture. Both Charles de Ketelaere and Malick Thiaw had excellent opportunities to kill the game but headed wide.
Spurs will seek to turn the return leg round in London on Wednesday in front of their home fans.
