BECE paper grading could be delayed if government doesn’t settle arrears, warns WAEC

BECE

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has expressed concerns about potential delays in the marking of the Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) in Ghana.

John Kapi, the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, revealed that while the government has released a portion of the funds required for the exams, the remaining amount is necessary to ensure the smooth processing and marking of the examination scripts.

Currently, only about 15% of the total payment for the 2023 BECE has been disbursed by the government. Kapi highlighted the importance of releasing the remaining funds to avoid significant disruptions to the marking process.

Kapi also discussed WAEC’s efforts to curb examination malpractices, mentioning collaboration with the National Investigative Bureau (NIB) to prevent cheating during the exams. He addressed concerns regarding candidate searches, making it clear that while thorough searches are encouraged, there are no plans to conduct invasive searches of private parts.

The BECE holds great significance for Junior High School students in Ghana as it plays a pivotal role in their educational journey. Delays in the marking and processing of the exam could potentially impact students’ academic prospects and future opportunities.
