Yaw Adomako Baafi, a Former Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has suggested that Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng should contemplate resigning if he believes he cannot effectively carry out his duties.
Agyebeng recently voiced his apprehension regarding the increasing dismissals in corruption cases, expressing concern about potential hindrances to the anti-corruption efforts.
In a media address on Wednesday, November 29, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng raised an alarm over the “growing hasty dismissiveness and lack of regard” for corruption cases, emphasizing that this trend could seriously obstruct the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) mandate.
Agyebeng highlighted four specific cases, including the acquittal of Cecilia Dapaah, a former government official, in a corruption case, and the court’s refusal to freeze the estate of former NPP General Secretary Kojo Owusu Afriyie, despite mounting corruption allegations.
Responding to Agyebeng’s concerns, Yaw Adomako Baafi, speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, criticized the Special Prosecutor for condemning both the institution and its parent organization.
Baafi argued that it was illogical for a professional lawyer to critique the institution where they are employed. He referred to the resignation of Martin Amidu, the former Special Prosecutor, suggesting that if Agyebeng is dissatisfied, he should consider resigning.
“It is, in my opinion, illogical to criticize the institution and its parent organization where you are employed. Kissi Agyebeng is a professional lawyer. When Martin Amidu was discontent, he resigned without facing repercussions,” remarked Yaw Adomako Baafi.
Meanwhile, during parliamentary proceedings on Tuesday, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, declared that the legislation establishing the OSP was an exercise in futility.
