UGMC is scheduled to perform two additional kidney transplants this month, building on the success of six similar operations last month.
The patients, all Ghanaians aged between 25 and 54, consist of two men and four women.
Dr. Emmanuel Asante, Head of the Urology Department at UGMC, shared insights into last month’s successful transplants with Graphic.com.gh.
He described the procedures as seamless and highlighted the team’s determination in overcoming barriers and challenges, showcasing the center’s expertise in complex surgical interventions and post-operative care.
He remarked, “The barriers and challenges were overcome by a determined team who ensured the procedures went smoothly, showcasing the centre’s capabilities in complex surgical interventions and post-operative care.”
Barbara Owusu-Hemeng, UGMC’s Media Affairs Manager, also spoke to Graphic Online, mentioning that family members or acquaintances served as donors for the first six patients due to the lack of an organ bank.
She added that the current cost of each kidney transplant at UGMC is around $25,000, with ongoing efforts to reduce expenses for the average citizen.
As an academic medical center, UGMC continues to excel in patient care, training, and research not only in Ghana but also across West Africa and beyond.
