Koforidua-Nkurakan road demo: Protesters clash with police

Koforidua-Nkurakan

A standoff has emerged between personnel from the Counter Terrorism Unit of the Ghana Police Service and residents of Ada, Magazine, Aboabo, Wawase, and Nkurakan.

The confrontation follows residents blocking the main Koforidua-Nkurakan road in protest of its deplorable condition.

Residents of these communities in the Yilo Krobo and the New Juaben South constituencies clad in red and black attire on Thursday morning took to the streets to demonstrate over the delay in the completion of the Koforidua-Nkurakan main road, blocking the road with tyres, logs, wooden boxes, among others, to prevent vehicular movement on the stretch.

The protest left many commuters who use the stretch stranded as there was no public transport on the roads.

According to the demonstrators, more than 10 people, including a student and Okada riders, have lost their lives through accidents on the stretch—preventable incidents they believe could have been avoided if the roads were in good condition.

Four assemblymembers from Ada, Aboabo, Magazine and Nkurakan who led the demonstration together with the Adukrom Akwadum chief Nana Asiedu Oduro issued a two-week ultimatum to the government to ensure that the contractor returns to the site to complete the project or face their wrath.

“Construction began on this road in 2019 and it is still not completed and so we are on the streets demonstrating because we are suffering and we give the contractor and the government two weeks to come to our aid because this is a major road.”
