Real Madrid boycott Ballon d’Or ceremony amid Vinicius Jr. snub

As Rodri emerges as the frontrunner, the club refuses to attend the prestigious event, citing discontent over the awards.

Real Madrid have reportedly decided to boycott the Ballon d’Or ceremony scheduled for Monday night, amid claims that Vinicius Jr. will not be receiving the award.

The Brazilian forward, who had been a strong contender for the prestigious honour, is now facing competition from Manchester City midfielder Rodri, who has reportedly been informed that he will take home the trophy.

Rodri, currently sidelined with an injury, arrived in Paris on crutches, with journalists sharing updates on social media suggesting that he is the likely winner. While Vinicius Jr. enjoyed a remarkable season, leading Real Madrid to triumphs in both the Champions League and La Liga, it appears Rodri’s success in winning Euro 2024 with Spain and the Premier League has shifted the spotlight.

This has prompted Real Madrid to withdraw from the event, with no representatives flying to Paris. According to Fabrizio Romano, the club is disinterested in attending, knowing Vinicius is unlikely to win. Notably, fellow nominee Jude Bellingham is also reportedly boycotting the ceremony. Manager Carlo Ancelotti, who has been nominated for the Coach of the Year award, will not attend either.

This year’s men’s shortlist is particularly significant, as it marks the first time since 2003 that both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are absent, ending a period of dominance in which they collectively claimed the award 13 times. Vinicius, who h as taken on Ronaldo’s iconic number seven shirt, has often been viewed as a potential successor to Messi, especially after a standout season that included major titles.
