Fire destroys furniture warehouse at Spintex Road

Spintex Road

A massive fire ravaged a major furniture warehouse along Accra’s Spintex Road on Monday night, destroying the entire structure and resulting in severe losses.

The blaze erupted around 9 p.m., prompting an urgent response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), with the Kasapreko Command first to arrive on the scene.

Their swift intervention helped contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to adjacent warehouses, although the structure itself was significantly damaged.

The warehouse reportedly contained highly flammable materials, including foam and upholstery products, which intensified the flames and made firefighting more challenging.

To combat the fire, the GNFS employed foam concentrate, a specialized firefighting agent designed for fires involving flammable materials.

In a Facebook livestream, Alex King Nartey, Public Relations Officer of the GNFS Public Affairs Department, described the challenges posed by the fire and highlighted the coordinated efforts of firefighters to prevent a larger disaster.

ADO Nartey explained that the initial crew from the Kasapreko Command, which was responsible for covering the Spintex Road area, quickly realised the scale of the incident and requested backup.

“Our crew from Kasapreko who covers the area, arrived at the scene and had to call for reinforcement from various stations including [GNFS] Headquarters, Trade Fair, University of Ghana and Abelemkpe, to fight the fire. It looks like it is a sofa warehouse and foam concentrate has been used to fight the fire.”

Within a short time, reinforcement arrived from four additional GNFS commands including the Headquarters, Trade Fair, University of Ghana, and Abelemkpe stations.

The team was able to prevent the fire from extending to adjoining warehouses and surrounding properties, avoiding what could have been an even larger disaster in the commercial district.

After almost a gruelling three-hour battle, the combined team successfully extinguished the fire around 11:30 p.m.
