Ghana’s Supreme Court has affirmed the re-election of President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo in the December 7, 2020 presidential elections.
This comes after the presidential candidate on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress in the 2020 December elections, Mr John Dramani Mahama had petitioned the apex court to among other reliefs, declare that none of the presidential candidates in the just ended December polls obtained the constitutional required votes of 50% +1 vote to be declared winner, and that the apex court should cause the Electoral Commission led by its chairperson, Mrs Jean Mensa, who was the 1st respondent in the case to cause a re-run of the presidential elections between the petitioner and the 2nd respondent in the case and presidential candidate in the 2020 elections on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo.
But the seven-member panel of Supreme Court judges led by Justice Kwasi Anim Yeboah who sat on the case which officially opened hearing on January 14, 2021 unanimously struck out the petition, saying, the petition brought before it lacked merit to grant any of the reliefs being sought by the petitioner.
However, a video showing reactions of the president and his backroom staff has popped online.
In the short video, the rather less-tensed president was seen comfortably seated in his chair whiles the vice president, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia also sat comfortably in his chair some metres away from his master, and nodding his head momentarily.
The obviously elated vice president was the first to congratulate his boss, after which other backroom staff at the presidency followed suit.
