The Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East who doubles as Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson has participated in the Green Ghana Campaign spearheaded by the Ministry of Environment Science and Technology.
Hon. Hawa Koomson joined staff and students of St. Brother Andre Senior High School at Opeikuma-Apraa in the Awutu Senya East constituency to plant trees around the school premises.
Addressing the students during the exercise, Hon. Hawa Koomson implored each student to nurture one tree and ensure that it grows well because according to her every Ghanaian has a responsibility to make the environment safe for human inhabitance.
She lamented that our activities are gradually destroying the ecosystem and it is high time Ghanaians woke up to the call of protecting the environment especially the forestry zone.
The Minister was accompanied by the Deputy CEO of Coastal Development Authority, Mr Emmanuel Kojo Affram.
The Nationwide tree planting exercise is in line with the celebration of world Forestry Day instituted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests. To commemorate the day, countries are encouraged to undertake local, national and international efforts to organize activities involving forests and trees, such as tree-planting campaigns.
The government of Ghana is leading a campaign to plant 5 million trees across the country. The one day exercise is being undertaken by schools, government officials and agencies, individuals and corporate institutions.
The aim of the exercise is to reduce the rate at which the natural reserves of the environment is being destroyed by human activities, and to reduce the effect of global warming in the world.
