The Ghana Police Service has explained why Abronye DC was detained even after he was cautioned.
The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party who appeared in court today was arrested over his claims that former President John Mahama is involved in a coup plot.
Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC following an invitation, reported himself to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command to assist in investigations.
The police subsequently cautioned and detained him on Tuesday.
The Service has however been criticized for this action.
Reacting to this, the Director-General of Public Affairs at the Ghana Police Service, DCOP Kwesi Ofori said the Service has the discretion to detain or release a suspect.
Speaking in an interview on Peace FM‘s morning show ‘Kokrokoo‘, he insisted that their decision to keep Abronye overnight was not “highhanded”.
“When it comes to these issues the police uses their discretion; either to take you to court or grant bail or be detained…it’s part of a professional decision to detain him even though he was cautioned,” he added.
Meanwhile, Abronye DC has been granted a GHc100,000 bail by an Accra Circuit Court.
