Ahiagbah questions Mahama: $200 million for 1500 apartments – is it reasonable?

NPP’s Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagba, questions John Mahama over the allocation of $200 million for the construction of 1500 apartments under the Saglemi Housing Project. Ahiagba finds it perplexing that Mahama, as the former president, failed to achieve the intended 5000 apartments, deeming the project scandalous.

Ahiagba expressed disbelief at Mahama’s criticism of the current government for shifting focus to the Pokuase affordable housing project instead of continuing the Saglemi project. He believes that the decision to pursue a new project stems from the fact that the Saglemi project became a scandal due to its inability to meet its goals.

Speaking in an interview with Citi FM on August 7, 2023, Ahiagba stated, “It’s a scandal on its own because how do you secure a $200 million loan for over 5000 apartments and end up with only 1500 apartments while expending the entire $200 million?”

He further pointed out that the initial contract approved by Parliament was for 5000 buildings, but the project was revised under Mahama’s administration without proper parliamentary consultation.

Ahiagba suggested that the Saglemi housing project warrants an investigation into the actions of John Dramani Mahama and the NDC officials involved. He emphasized that the lack of accountability for the project’s shortcomings raises concerns and called for action against the NDC.
