The Member of Parliament for Juaboso, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has exposed the government’s inefficiency in handling the recent crisis at Korle-Bu Renal Dialysis Unit.
Speaking on Starr Today with Papa Ekow Boakye, the lawmaker shared his concerns about the dire situation, highlighting the urgent need for effective solutions to save lives.
Akandoh criticized the government’s justification for delaying procurement processes, stating, “It is only an irresponsible person who will do this… These are about the lives of the people.” He emphasized the need for a threshold or limit to gauge stock depletion, allowing for timely requests for future stock.
The MP attributed the unit’s closure to government-owed payments, saying, “Maybe there’s a reason. Whenever you ask them, because of self-saving mechanisms, they will say they haven’t paid. In reality, they may not have the money.” Mr. Akandoh assured that the NDC’s campaign manifesto will include a renal and cancer fund, ensuring dedicated resources for dialysis and cancer treatment.
Akandoh blasted the government’s handling of the situation, saying, “Government doesn’t think about the people of this country. And sometimes it’s quite disheartening that they also rule with a lot of lies… We have put forward very workable proposals for some time now. But I can simply not understand why some of these things persistently do okay.”
He added, “You don’t wait till you run out completely of your consumables. So you always have to have a limit below which you will not, I mean, below which you will have to do your order. You must have projections.” Mr. Akandoh emphasized that Korle Bu has all the data and knows the percentage of increments of patients every year.
The MP concluded, “So we are going to see the scrapping of taxes, the waiver of taxes on these consumables. I am very, very sure and clear in my mind this is going to happen.” The NDC will launch its campaign manifesto on Saturday, which includes the renal and cancer fund.
Akandoh’s comments come as the Renal Patients Association expresses skepticism over the Korle Bu Renal Unit’s ability to keep its units fully operational. The association has called for urgent action to address the situation, and Akandoh’s assurances provide hope for a solution under an NDC government.
