President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed his concerns regarding the enduring colonial structures that persist within Ghana’s economy, underscoring their continued detrimental impact on the country.
Nonetheless, he assured the nation that resolute steps will be taken to sever ties with the prevailing pattern of an economy focused on the production and export of raw materials. The goal is to make a shift toward a contemporary, value-enhancing, and industrialized economy.
President Akufo-Addo highlighted that, prior to the disruptions triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, all economic indicators were pointing towards the realization of this transformation.
In spite of the economic challenges faced, the President emphasized the substantial advancements made across various sectors.
“In my role as President of the Republic, my main focus has been on ensuring that my leadership of Ghana marks a phase during which our nation transitions from being a mere exporter of raw materials and importer of finished goods to becoming a progressive, value-adding industrialized entity.”
These statements were made by the President during a banquet held to honor esteemed senior citizens as part of the commemoration of this year’s Founders’ Day. The event took place at the Jubilee House’s Banquet Hall, with the presence of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Founders’ Day, observed on August 4, holds immense significance in Ghana as it commemorates the contributions of successive generations in liberating the nation from colonial rule and establishing the nation-state.
