Barça President Joan Loporta Appeals To de Jong To ‘Do everything possible’ To Stay

Barcelona have been busy in this transfer window with the club making some marquee signings to bolster their squad ahead of the new season but there has not been similar exits so far.

The Blaugrana will have to sell, loan or reduce players salary to enable them stay within their squad-cost-limit which will give the club the green light to register new players for the upcoming campaign.

One player who has mostly been linked with a move away from the Catalans is Dutch midfielder Frankie de Jong. de Jong will likely become the sacrificial lamb for the club to reduce its wage bill considerably.

The former Ajax man is however understood to be reluctant with a move away from the Spanish giants but may favor a salary reduction.

In a press conference in New York City, where the club is having their pre-season, President of the Barcelona, Joan Laporta appeared to have made a public appeal for de Jong to reduce his salary.

“We are going to do everything possible so that he can stay and we hope that the player also does everything possible in order to stay. We all have to make an effort.

He added “We found a payroll that had shot up more than 40%. What is clear is that we have a new salary structure and all players have to fit into it. The important thing is that he wants to stay and we want him to stay.”
