Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, widely known as NAPO, the Vice Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has reaffirmed that a future NPP government will not impose a ban on small-scale mining.
Instead, he emphasised the party’s commitment to empowering small-scale miners to engage in responsible mining practices and expand their operations.
Speaking to community members and party supporters at a campaign event in the Manso Adubia constituency in the Ashanti Region on Tuesday, Dr Opoku Prempeh highlighted the importance of distinguishing between regulated, responsible mining and illegal mining activities, which have caused significant environmental and social harm.
He pointed out that the NPP’s approach will focus on promoting sustainable practices within the small-scale mining sector.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh also referenced the promises made by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP flagbearer, to support responsible mining initiatives that will benefit local communities and the economy as a whole.
This commitment comes amid a backdrop of heightened tensions as Organised Labour prepares to commence a nationwide strike starting Thursday, October 10, 2024. The strike is a response to ongoing frustrations over the government’s handling of the illegal mining crisis, commonly referred to as “galamsey,” which has severely impacted both the environment and the livelihoods of workers in the mining sector.
Organised Labour has been vocal in its demands for the government to take stronger action against illegal mining while simultaneously supporting the formalisation of the small-scale mining industry.
They argue that a balanced approach is essential to protect the environment while ensuring that legitimate miners can operate without fear of harassment or shutdowns.
“A government led by Dr. Bawumia will promote mining. We cannot stop mining, but we will do so responsibly. We will not mine to destroy our water bodies and forests.”
“We will make equipment that ensures responsible mining available to Ghanaians,” he stated.
