Ghanaian afrobeat and hip-hop artist Black Sherif has won the 2023 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) for Artiste of the Year.

The award was presented to him at the Accra International Conference Centre on Saturday, May 6, 2023.

Black Sherif, whose real name is Mohammed Ismail Sherif, was up against some stiff competition in the Artiste of the Year category, including Piesie Esther, Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, King Promise, Kidi, Camidoh, and Joe Mettle. However, he was ultimately able to secure the win thanks to his strong fan base and his critically acclaimed debut album, “Kwaku the Traveller.”

The 23-year-old artist from Konongo in the Ashanti Region first rose to prominence in 2021 with his hit single “Second Sermon.” The song was a huge success in Ghana and beyond, and it helped to launch Black Sherif’s career. He followed up “Second Sermon” with a string of other successful singles, including “Money,” “Kwaku the Traveller,” and “First Sermon.”

Black Sherif’s debut album, “Kwaku the Traveller,” was released in December 2022. The album was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to solidify Black Sherif’s status as one of Ghana’s most promising young artists.
