Some sections of Assembly members in the Awutu Senya East Constituency of the Central Region have expressed mix reaction following the announcement by the Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson allocating 100million cedis as allowance for Assembly Members in the country.
The Finance Minister while presenting the 2025 Budget statement in Parliament disclosed that, the Government has allocated 100million cedis to be given to the Assembly Members as allowance to help ease some burden that comes with their job.
Reacting to this move by the Government, the Assembly Member of Kasoa Opeikuma-Kumbe Electoral area, Hon. Habbib Adams welcomed the decision and applauded President Mahama for fulling his Campaign promised.
Hon. Habbib Adams added that, though they welcome the move, the allowance if disbursed to about 6,500 assembly Members in the country will not be enough to cushion them.
He is therefore calling on the Government to increase the allowance along the line as he described the work of the Assembly Members as the ones who work directly with the electorate.
Hon. Habbib Adams furthered his concerns by demanding for a Legislative Instrument (L.I.) which will mandate the Government to pay Assembly Members a monthly salaries not just allowances.
He argued that Assembly Members are equally elected as Members of Parliament and President hence the narrative by some people describing the work of the Assembly Members as voluntary isn’t acceptable.
