COPA ITALIA: Felix Afena-Gyan Scores As Cremonese Knock Napoli Out Of Competition

Bottom-placed Serie A side Cremonese manifested resilience and pulled off a major upset after knocking leaders Napoli out of Coppa Italia last-16 through penalty shootout.

The relegation threatened side took the lead through Charles Pickel in the 13th minute but Napoli restored parity after 20 minutes and then went ahead nine minutes before halftime thanks to goals from defender Juan Jesus and forward Giovanni Simeone respectively.

But Ghanaian striker Felix Afena-Gyan levelled late on to turn the game on its head.

In extra time there was drama as Cremonese’s Leonardo Sernicola was sent off but the visitors held on and dragged the game to penalties.

Cremonese who are yet to win a game in the Italian top-flight prevailed in the shootout — they scored all five of their spot-kicks while Stanislav Lobotka missed Napoli’s fourth to hand the visitors a huge victory.

Luciano Spalletti’s side are nine points clear at the top of Serie A, having thumped Juventus 5-4 over the weekend.
