Dr. Randy Abbey, the host of Good Morning Ghana, stopped Dr. Gideon Boako, an aide to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party for the 2024 election, from touting the construction of youth resource centres as a key achievement of the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government.
Dr. Gideon Boako, in an appearance on the show, mentioned the youth resource centres as a major achievement of the government in the sports sector.
“We have constructed more sporting facilities than any government since 1992. We’ve completed six new multipurpose stadiums and have four more ongoing,” Dr. Gideon Boako mentioned.
But Dr. Randy Abbey, who had questioned the lack of progress on the facilities in an earlier edition of his show, urged Dr. Gideon Boako not to count the construction of the youth resource centres as an achievement of the government.
“Which six? Doc, forget about them,” Dr. Abbey told Gideon Boako.
His statement stems from reports that most of the supposedly finished facilities are in terrible states and left to rot.
The Ho multi-purpose centre, which was commissioned by President Akufo-Addo ahead of the 2023 Independence Day celebrations, is in ruins with the place overtaken by weeds.
Recently, the youth of Adaklu and Ho petitioned President Akufo-Addo to operationalize the facility.
“The abandonment of such a project without considering youth development activities such as sports and skills training, among others, is taken as a deliberate act by the government to discriminate against the youth of Volta in the distribution of the national cake,” the youth fumed.
They said that one year after the successful independence parade, the construction firm on the project, Wilcado Construction Company Ltd, left the site, leaving a skeletal staff without any equipment.
