ECG goes after Wontumi Radio and TV over 300,000ghc power theft

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is chasing after Wontumi Radio and TV in Kumasi because they stole electricity.

The Ashanti regional chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), owns two media houses.

They were among about 100 businesses in the area that were accused of stealing power.

The General Manager of Wontumi Communications Limited, also known as “Away Bus” in Kumasi, said, “Unfortunately, I don’t have the bill in front of me, but they gave us about GHS300,000 to pay at first, and then they lowered it to over GHS100,000.”

“I’m surprised that this issue is in the news,” he said.

“You’ll be surprised to learn that ECG has started to collect the debt. When we bought power from ECG for the first time since the problem started, 40% of the money was taken out to pay off the debt. This means that we have started to pay, so why do you go to the media?”

“As the business manager for the media company, I’m not very technical. I don’t even know what a tempered meter is, so we were just doing our jobs.”

“Until this problem came up, none of my technical staff did that either.”

“We still haven’t told Chairman Wontumi, who owns the station, so we can settle the problem with ECG. As you know, he’s been very busy with his campaign.”
