A 3-bedroom detached self-contained house has been engulfed by fire at Estate Top, a community in the Gomoa East District Assembly which shares administrative boundaries with Kasoa in the Central Region.
A principal witness to the incident, a 13-year old Bright Frimpong narrates that he was on top of a mango tree at the back of the building when he detected some smoke emanating from the roof of the building. According to him he did not pay attention until the smoke grew bigger with fire coming through the rafters of the room, when he raised the alarm of the fire outbreak.
According to snippets gathered from conversations of witnesses by this reporter, the fire broke out around 1000hrs on Saturday morning, by which time the occupants of the house had all gone out.
According to our reporter who was a witness to the incident, it took the bravery of some brave men, women, and children in the vicinity to use sand, and water from a mobile water supplier and reservoirs to fight the blazing fire before the arrival of personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
The GNFS personnel however identified electrical fault as the cause of the fire which caused collateral damages to all the household items.
Asked why it took them so long to arrive at the accident scene the leader of the GNFS team explained that firstly, the person who first called and reported the incident gave them wrong directions to the place. He continued that drivers of commercial and private cars also blocked their way, and prevented them from arriving at the scene on time.
The personnel of the GNFS who spoke with this reporter bemoaned the fact that a whole Kasoa community of over 100,000 residents does not have a single Fire Service Station. He added that their single station at Buduburam (Liberia Camp) is the only station that serves the Winneba township in the Central Region through to Tetegu, in the Greater Accra Region.
Some residents of the area also expressed worry as to why since its creation as a Municipal Assembly, Kasoa or the Gomoa East District Assembly does not have a Fire Service station. They however called on the Members of Parliament of the 2 constituencies, as well as the 2 Municipal and District Assemblies to get at least one Fire Service station in any of the Assemblies for them.
