The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has called on all political actors to comply with road traffic regulations to reduce accidents as the December 7 general elections approach.
According to the Authority, the number of road crashes increases during election years, hence the call for action.
This follows the development of a safety code by the NRSA, in collaboration with political parties and civil society organisations, to guide their movements on the country’s roads during the campaigning period.
In a media interview after a ‘Stay Alive’ campaign organised in collaboration with the Richard Yaw Boateng Junior Foundation, the Principal Planning Manager at the National Road Safety Authority, Dennis Yeribu intimated that adherence to the traffic regulations outlined in the code will help reduce road crashes this year.
“When it comes to election years, the National Road Safety Authority has recognised that they are years where crashes, injuries and deaths, which we call CIDs, rise. From 2012 to 2020, all the election years recorded higher deaths than any other year in Ghana.
“The National Road Safety Authority, as the lead agency for road safety management in Ghana, has engaged all the political players, the political parties and their executives, as well as some CSOs, the Ghana Police Service, the Electoral Commission, and we have developed a code.
:If they go by them, we are sure that the deaths we record during the latter part of the year, especially in political years, will not be the case.”
