Funds delay release of 2024 WASSCE results: 460,000 candidates affected

2023 WASSCE

The delay in releasing the 2024 WASSCE results has become a significant issue, affecting hundreds of thousands of young Ghanaians.

The release of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results for over 460,000 candidates across Ghana has been delayed due to financial and logistical challenges.

The situation has caused significant anxiety among candidates and their families, as the results play a crucial role in their academic and career progression.

According to a press release by West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the delay stems from broken scanners critical for processing examination scripts, compounded by funding constraints. WAEC reportedly requires immediate repairs or replacement of the equipment to complete the results processing.

Furthermore, the Government of Ghana owes WAEC a significant sum of GHS 118 million, a debt that has directly impacted the council’s operational capacity. WAEC depends on government funding to facilitate examinations and ensure timely release of results. The delay in disbursement has disrupted their workflow, affecting not only Ghana but potentially other countries within the West African subregion that rely on WAEC’s services.
