A Kumasi-based Islamic Cleric Sheikh Anas Tawfik has been urged to provide a comprehensive breakdown of a donation made by office of the Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in 2023.
According to Murtala Mohammed, a politician and activist, a statement released by the Sheikh to explain his side of the story failed to account for a donation of US$50,000 from Vice President Bawumia to support a kidney transplant.
“Stop this jokes. All we need is the break down of the 50,000 dollars kawai! You have insulted everybody with your microphone. Now there is an issue of cash, you’re issuing press statement. Mount the podium, quote the Qur’an and hadith and defend yourself. All this people too say dem bi mallan?” He wrote on his facebook wall.
This comes after Vice President made a Ghs100,000 donation through the Islamic Cleric to the said Sheikh Anas to support the kidney transplant of one of his students named Samaan, MyNewsGh.com was told. The Sheikh publicly announced and acknowledged the GHS100,000 donation.
The Vice President later donated another US$50,000 towards the transplant to the same Sheikh which was not publicly disclosed.
Following accusations of allegedly keeping the dollars without publicly announcing as he is the first GHS100,000, Sheikh Anas’ institute in Kumasi refuted the allegations.
In a statement to explain the US$50,000 Dollars silence, Sheikh Anas said he “has been hinting his audience and followers about the support in his recent sermons” using cryptic terms to heighten “the expectations and interests of his congregants and followers”
The statement said he Sheikh Anas “usually will say “I have a big announcement for you; there is good news about Samann’s condition, but I want to finish with somethings that we are doing, and I will tell you about it, but know that very soon Samann will be taken out for his kidney transplantation.”
The statement continued:
“Unfortunately, Sheikh Anas became the subject of malicious, unfounded rumormongering by some people recently, so he was advised not to be directly involve with the matter, since his reputation is as stake. Samann requested to Darul Hadith that his parent is demanding for their (his and his brother’s) passport because the process is delaying. Sheikh Anas pleaded with them to exercise patience as the process is far advance; they are only waiting for the appointment date from Ajmera Transplant Centre. He insisted, so Sheikh Anas met with them and handed over the passport to them and amount of FIFTY THOUSAND CEDIS (50,000GHS). He gave them a contact number to call regarding the Renal Replacement Therapy, which they havn’t called till date. It is surprising to note that even though they have not called the number, yet, it is out there that Sheikh Anas has misappropriated the US$50,000. This is really telling!
