Going to IMF for a bailout is an act of God – Obiri Boahen

The Deputy General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP) Nana Obiri Boahen has described the government’s decision to seek a bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as an act of God, arguing that it is nothing strange”.

“Going to IMF is not something so strange. The only things just as we are human, sometimes in our speech and behaviors, we must give room for the unexpected. Had it not been that nothing happened and the NPP government decided to go to IMF, then we may be grumbling a lot”, Nana Obiri Boahen said in an interview with Angel FM in Kumasi.

“The fact that we insisted we were not going to IMF some time back and now we have decided to go doesn’t mean our homegrown policies have failed or we don’t have the men anymore, the situation is uncontrollable”, he added.

The Private Legal Practitioner blamed the current hardship in the country and the decision to seek a bailout from the IMF on the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian-Ukraine war.

“Look at the pandemics that shook the world, which has made us prompted our decision, with that, COVID is act of God, Russia-Ukraine war is also an act of God”, he indicated.

Meanwhile, the IMF team led by Economist Carlo Sdralevich will meet managers of the economy on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, in the country’s capital to help deal with Ghana’s balance of payment challenges.

But Former President John Dramani Maham has said President Akufo – Addo not to allow finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta to be part of the conversation with the IMF.
