The Minister of Roads and Highway Kwesi Amoako-Atta has said that if Ghanaians had embraced the E-levy policy, the government would have fixed more roads in Ghana.
According to the road minister, the financial crisis of the country, it has affected some of the road ministry’s infrastructure projects. He stated that that has delayed the construction of the roads.
Honorable Amoako-Atta made this disclosure while addressing Parliament’s Government Assurances Committee members on Tuesday, August 30, 2022. He said “One of the key areas of the E-Levy was the road sector. So if it had been, for instance, supported it could have helped.”
The roads minister disclosed that the amount of money the government was expecting from the E-levy did not match up. He said that the government has not met its target of raising some GH¢4.5 billion from the E-levy.
E-levy has been a debatable topic in Ghana as many Ghanaians opposed the policy. The proposed percentage the government initially introduced was 1.7%. However, after a series of complaints from Ghanaians, the government reduced it to 1.5% on each transaction from GHc100 and above.
The road’s minister has however said that most of the roads are yet to be reconstructed due to insufficient funds.
