Residents of Avetakpo in the Ho West District have called for medical intervention following the rapid spread of a strange skin disease through the community.
With just over 200 people in the community, nearly 30 individuals—ranging from adults to children as young as one year old—have already contracted the disease.
The cause remains unknown, and health officials who visited the area last week to assess the situation are yet to return, raising concerns about the adequacy of the response.
Community members have described the situation as dire, with many worried about the potential for further spread if the disease remains unchecked. Parents of affected children and other residents have expressed frustration over the lack of follow-up from health authorities.
In an interview with Citi News, some residents called the condition troubling, citing the rapid rate of infection and the vulnerability of young children who have been impacted.
“It started some weeks ago with an itchy skin and I went to the hospital at Akrade and it went mild a little but it came back some few days ago, with some rashes on my hand and legs. I reported the incident to the headman and before we realized, some children in the community also developed the rashes on their skins,” Rebecca Dawudu said.
The headman of Avetakpo, Prosper Zateh, confirmed the outbreak and echoed the residents’ calls for urgent intervention.
