Just 24 hours ago, Na Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV, the Overlord of the Waala Traditional Council, denied knowing that two people had been flogged. Now, he says that he ordered them to be flogged.
The two are said to have been involved in a scandal involving a sex video that went viral.
He said that it was one of the steps that the Council, which is made up of opinion leaders in the city, took to fight the immoral and bad behaviour of young people in the area in recent years.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Wa, he was asked to comment on the video that was going around on social media and to explain why he didn’t think the young people beat the boy and girl without his permission.
He said that flogging was part of the rules that were put in place to teach discipline to the young people, who had been acting in ways that were bad for society.
“Along with the flogging, the parents of the boy and the girl will agree to let the two get married and stay together as a couple to serve as a warning to the youth and to live righteous lives,” he said.
The Wa Naa said that the rules were meant to bring peace, morality, and decency to the Municipality so that investors would come and give jobs to the many young people.
“The measure will also let people who come to Wa enjoy their stay, and foreigners who visit their relatives won’t have to worry about their safety,” he said.
He said that he, his elders, and other opinion leaders would not avoid their duties, but would instead make sure that Wa stayed a peaceful place for everyone to live.
On May 31, Naa Kadri Ibrahim, a representative for Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV, the Overlord of the Wala Traditional Council, spoke out against the flogging.
He said that the act could only hurt the reputation of the palace and promised that the people who did it would be found and punished to the fullest extent of the law.
The fact that Wa Naa said he was okay with the flogging goes against what his spokesperson said.
