Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Ghana has revealed how his decision to play for Ghana in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations thwarted his move to Premier League giants Manchester City.
Being a Black Stars player can be demanding and Gyan learned this the hardest way.
Gyan threatened to leave camp after Ghanaians criticised him for his underwhelming performance but the President of Ghana at the time John Agyekum Kuffour intervened and prevented him from leaving the Black Stars camp.
Speaking in an interview with Dan Kwaku Yaboah TV, the Ghana all-time scorer said he sacrificed his move to Manchester City to play in the CAN 2008 tournament.
“Before CAN 2008, Man City were interested in signing me. Sven-Göran Eriksson was the coach at the time and they were keen to sign me,”
He added “My manager asked that I go and treat myself and then I sign for Man City but I told him I wanted to play at the Africa Cup because it was going to be my first one and was going to be hosted by Ghana, so when Ghanaians criticised me I was pained a lot because I left a lot of money to sacrifice and play at the tournament but they didn’t appreciate it.
