Liverpool left it very late after they came from behind to edge Newcastle 2-1 at Anfield on Wednesday night.
Youngster Fabio Cavalho fires home a last gasp winner to help Jurgen Klopp’s men cross the finishing line in a game that was filled with grit and panache.
Liverpool dominated and controlled possession in most part of the first installment but lacked the cutting edge in front of goal as Newcastle contained and hit them on the counter intermittently.
The visitors took the lead midway through the second half after their record signing Alexander Isak drilled home inside the penalty box to open his Newcastle account on his debut.
Back from recess the hosts pushed and prod ceaselessly and got the much needed equalizer on the hour mark. Salah found Firmino inside the 18-yard-box and the Brazilian finished with a superb one time shot to level up.
Isak thought he had scored the winning goal when he sent Robertson and Gomez on the ground before firing home his ‘second’ but the goal was chopped off as he was adjudged to be offside.
And from there Newcastle were constantly under siege as Liverpool unleashed a flurry of attacks. The Magpies failed to deal properly with a last minute corner, and substitute Cavalho was there to poke home the winner with literally the last kick of the game.
