Liverpool have defeated Manchester City 3-1 to win the Community Shield at the King Power Stadium on Saturday.
Liverpool dominated possession and were constantly on the front foot from the first minute — they however took the lead after 21 minutes through Trent Alexander-Arnold whose curler deflected off City denfeder Nathan Ake before hitting the post and into the back of the net.
Manchester City gradually warmed themselves into the game and created some decent chances with Haaland coming close to leveling the score in few occasions.
Substitute Julian Alvarez equalized midway through the second half after Liverpool keeper Adrian failed to deal with Phil Foden’s strike properly. The referee initially adjudged the goal as offside but VAR review saw the decision overturned.
It was the turn of another substitute, Darwin Nunez, whose first effort hit the face of Ederson. He had another chance to score but his header was blocked by the arm of Ruben Dias and VAR again came to the rescue, but this time for Liverpool. Salah stepped up and converted the resultant penalty kick cold-bloodedly.
In additional time Nunez got the golden opportunity to silence his over-the-hill critics with a sumptuous lovely diving header to complete the damage for Jurgen Klopp’s men.
This is the first Community Shield triumph for the Reds since 2006.
