Mahama vows to overhaul scholarship scheme, to ban officials from applying

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to reform the government scholarship program by preventing individuals with conflicts of interest from applying.

Addressing the launch of the NDC manifesto, Mahama lamented that the program, intended for underprivileged individuals, has been compromised by state officials who can afford to sponsor their wards.

Mahama vowed that under his administration, no government official or political appointee will be allowed to apply for the scholarship.

He described the current system as marred by “kalabule” (deceit) and emphasized the need to streamline the process.

Mahama stated, “Government scholarships have been fraught with a lot of ‘kalabule,’ meaning deceit. We want to streamline it, and as I’ve said, persons with conflicts of interest will not be allowed to apply for the scholarships. None of my ministers will do it.”

“Any political appointee must not apply for the scholarships, you must pay. Children under privilege, those who cannot afford it are the ones who must get the scholarship.”
