Newcastle United Striker Callum Wilson Believes He Deserves A Spot In England’s World Cup squad

England and Newcastle United forward Callum Wilson has boldly declared that he deserves to be in the England squad for the World Cup in Qatar.

The Newcastle striker has four caps for the Three Lions but his last appearance was in October 2019 when he played in a Euro 2020 qualifier against Bulgaria.

However after scoring twice in the Magpies’ first three league matches, Callum strongly believes his electric start to the season should warrant him an automatic spot in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad later this year.

Wilson’s recent form has given him a renewed sense of confidence as he sees himself to be an obvious pick to be one of England’s forwards.

“You’re taking Harry Kane. Behind Harry Kane, you’re taking myself, Tammy Abraham is also doing well. You’ve got Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings, who are also doing well.” The 30-year-old said on the Footballer’s Football podcast.

‘I’m on the plane, Harry Kane’s on the plane. There’s going to be players travelling to the World Cup that don’t make the September squad. There’s always one or two players who come from nowhere. For me, you’re going Kane, myself, Tammy Abraham, who’s a different kind of striker, and then you’re probably taking Danny Ings. That would probably be my four, form dependent. He added.

Wilson also knows very well that his World Cup hopes are dependent on his output on the pitch and not his ranting off it: I’m trying to do my talking on the pitch. I always say, I don’t want to talk my way into a squad. I want the football to do the talking for me.’

Southgate was in attendance at St. James’ Park last weekend as Wilson scored to help Newcastle drew 3-3 against Manchester City.

The striker was forced off in the second half after complaining of muscle tightness but Eddie Howe is hopeful that the problem is not too serious.
