Nurses and Midwives announce dates for strike action over Manhyia Hospital nurse assault

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association ( GRNMA) has announced staggered strike action plan to drum home their demand for the dismissal of the Ashanti Regional Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS), Mr Alex Opoku Mensah, who verbally assaulted a nurse at the Manhyia District Hospital recently.

The association had given the National Service Scheme (NSS) and Government a 72-hour ultimatum to sack the Mr Alex Opoku Mensah after the case of the assault went viral on social media. The ultimatum elapsed today but Mr Opoku Prempeh has only been suspended. The association is unimpressed and is bent on carrying out their threat to strike.

The strike action will begin tomorrow December 2, 2022 at the Manhyia District Hospital were the incident took place. All nurses and midwives are to lay down their tools.

“In view of the fact that the 72 hrs deadline given in our Press Release issued on 29th November, 2022 expires today, 1st December 2022, we require all leaders of our regional branches and all nurses and midwives to take note of the following:

  1. Friday, 2nd December 2022. – Manhyia strikes
  2. Tuesday, 6th December 2022, Ashanti Region strikes if the Regional Director is still not FIRED.
  3. Friday, 9th December, 2022 – Nationwide strike…”a notice issued by the Public Relations Unit of the association read in part.

The association wants the National Service Scheme NSS and the Government to act promptly to avert the strikes.

“We expect National Service Scheme and Government for that matter to sack Mr Alex Opoku Mensah and we hope they do that without any further delay to avert disruptions in the nursing and midwifery services across the country,” the notice added.

Mr Alex Opoku Mensah stormed the Manhyia District Hospital and verbally assaulted a nurse for showing disrespect to his daughter who works at the facility as a junior doctor. The nurse is alleged to have spoken disrespectfully to her on phone regarding a prescription the junior doctor had made.
