A disturbing incident has occurred in the Effutu Constituency, where journalists from Obaatanpa Radio and Kessben TV were attacked by alleged NDC thugs. The incident happened after the journalists reported on the rejection of President Mahama’s MCE nominee by Assembly members.
Kwaku Mireku Nyampong, a reporter for Obaatanpa Radio and Kessben TV, and his colleagues were reportedly targeted in the attack, which has raised concerns about the safety of journalists in the area. The attack appears to have been motivated by the journalists’ accurate reporting of the MCE nominee’s rejection.
The journalists were simply doing their job, reporting the truth about the Assembly’s decision. However, their attackers seemed to take issue with the factual reporting, highlighting the challenges journalists face in performing their duties without fear or intimidation.
An official complaint has been lodged with the Winneba Police Command, and an investigation into the matter has been initiated. The victims are therefore calling for the immediate arrest of the perpetrators, demanding that justice is served and their safety is guaranteed.
The Ghana Journalists Association and other stakeholders have been urged to take note of this incident and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice, while also calling for greater protection for journalists in the line of duty.
