France and Tottenham Hotspur captain Hugo Lloris has announced his retirement from international football.
The goalkeeper’s spell with Les Bleus spanned over a decade where he made 145 appearances — making him the most-capped player in France colors.
Lloris led France to a World Cup glory in Russia 2018 and also spearheaded their route to a second successive finals in Qatar four years later where they lost to Messi’s Argentina on penalties.
He also oversaw a European Championship campaign in which they finished as runners-up as well as a Nations League title.
The 36-year-old explains he wanted to leave the stage when the applause are high and in a period with enough gap before the next international break out of respect for his teammates.
Lloris began his career with hometown club OGC Nice, made his debut as a teenager in October 2005 before joining Olympique Lyonnaise three years later amid interest from clubs including Milan.
The Frenchman joined Tottenham in 2012, and helped the team reach the Champions League final in 2019.
