Only weed exportation can save Ghana’s economy – Public policy expert to gov’t

Keskine Owusu Poku, Public Policy Expert and activist of the governing New Patriotic Party, says the shortest way out of the economic crisis is to produce and export marijuana (alias wee or weed).

Marijuana may be exported responsibly for foreign cash, he said.

In social media posts, a University of Edinburgh doctoral candidate who has advised the Ghanaian government said marijuana should be legalized and decriminalized.

He said nations that influenced Ghana to prohibit marijuana have retreated and Ghana could capitalize.

“The fastest way to get out of such crisis is to have a commodity that you can sustainably supply. Marijuana is that commodity for Ghana,” he averred.

He added that “those who forced you to criminalize it are now decriminalizing and legalizing. Take advantage, grow wee and sell to them for forex.”

The growing of marijuana in Ghana for health and industrial purposes has been decriminalized since 2019.

The Parliament of Ghana passed the Narcotics Control Commission Bill, 2019 to allow for the use of marijuana ( cannabis) for strict health and industrial purposes.

It is unclear how the new law has impacted the country economically since its passage of the law.
