Prez. Nana Addo Speaks On Issues Surrounding Free SHS

Prez. Nana Akufo-Addo on his two days tour to the central region visited Obaatanpa Radio where he spoke about the issues around the Free SHS policy.

In a interview with Obaatanpa Radio’s Kofi Kyei Baffuor, the president  said “Some people already want to scale back some of the significant programs, like the Free SHS policy. Strong social forces are opposed to it and argue that parents should pay for or contribute to their children’s education. But I see things differently. The President stated, “I believe the value to society and the country are evident.

Prez. Akufo-Addo has stated that he is willing to engage in a national discussion about the government’s Free SHS initiative.

He said that such a discussion ought to cover funding, accessibility, and sustainability.

Education industry stakeholders have demanded more extensive consultation on the Free SHS policy, which many claim is riddled with difficulties.

When asked about a speech he made at a meeting with the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) leadership at Jubilee House, the President remarked that although the policy has been criticized by a number of individuals, it is here to stay.

“One of the demands being made by the public is a reconsideration of free SHS. I believe we should discuss the impact of education on the development of our country more broadly, as well as the fiscal and public sector contributions we make to national education.

In the midst of these calls, the President has already stated that the support from the IMF that the government is requesting will not have an impact on the Free Secondary Education Policy.
